Monday nights, 6PM, at Awesome Inc., we meet up to expose ourselves to indie games. C’mon out and look at how small game designers are pushing the medium, or bring something we can play!
Today’s game included Epic Flail, ittle Dew, and composition 83.
Epic Flail
A 2-D gladitorial brawler that is currently in early Alpha, Epic Flail is an incredibly difficult hack and slash that pits two users against each other with relatively simply controllers that belay the difficulty of the required actions. While playing we had an intensely difficult time making any substantial in roads in the variety of waves. The game is competitive only in the sense that you compete against scores, though there is a plan to add a versus mode.
Gameplay is fun, but there are issues with character definition, and it can be difficult to keep track of your location and which character you are. The fact that one person can continue playing long after the other has died creates an interesting conundrum, best solved perhaps by a rescue mechanic or by a Spelunky style ghost.
ittle Dew
ittle Dew is a Zelda-like game available on PC, Ouya and Wii U. Our first Wii U game, ittle Dew allows you to use the second screen to look at a map and check the inventory. ittle Dew utilizes a variety of conventions and stylistic choices shown in the series of Zelda games and was designed to be used for speed running.
The game has an interesting take on humor and definitely plays on the conventions and expectations of fans of the franchise.
Composition 83
Composition 83 is a horror exploration game from nuprahtor. Short and simple, the game is simple and short but has a lasting impression.
One of the strengths of composition 83 is the way it utilizes atmosphere to heighten the situation, artfully combining subtle imagery and expectation to craft a one of a kind experience.
Have an indie game you’d like to talk about? Bring it out. We meet every Monday at 6PM at Awesome Inc, in Lexington, KY.
