• Indie Game Night (2013-02-04): So Much Combat, Too Few Arrows

Monday nights, 6PM, at Awesome Inc., we meet up to expose ourselves to indie games. C’mon out and look at how small game designers are pushing the medium, or bring something to share.

This week, we looked at: Glaciators, TowerFall, The Archer, King Arthur’s Gold, Masjin, Tunneler, Take Arms, Cobalt, Joe Danger, and CoD of Duty.

    Details after the break.

    Glaciators

    1-4p local, deathmatch, win/mac, paid

Glaciators is a local multiplayer deathmatch ice skating game. Fire harpoons at your friends (or CPU players) and don’t fall into open water. May require gamepads for multiple players.

    TowerFall

    1-4p local, deathmatch
    Did not play

TowerFall is an upcoming local multiplayer retro archery platformer with deathmatch and team deathmatch play. Like Samurai Gunn, it gives players a limited amount of (recoverable) arrows. Dash around, firing at others, collecting powerups, fighting to the death.

    The Archer

    1p, platformer
    Did not play

The Archer is an in-development archery-driven fantasy platformer. The author intends to include several kinds of arrows with special effects and rideable mounts.

    King Arthur’s Gold

    networked multiplayer, action, win/mac/linux, free/paid
    Did not play

King Arthur’s Gold is an online multiplayer team fantasy platformer, similar to Soldat. It also features construction mechanics a la Terraria.

    Masjin

    networked multiplayer, action, windows, free

Masjin is an online multiplayer team deathmatch platformer, similar to Soldat or Gang Garrison 2. It features a few player classes and a selection of flying/driving/tunneling vehicles.

    Tunneler

    2p, deathmatch, dos, free
    Did not play

Tunneler was a 2-player-only tank deathmatch game for DOS, published by Geoffrey Silverton in 1991. At 21KB, it’s startlingly small. The game procedurally generates a large underground world filled with dirt and rock, with the two players inside color-coded bases some distance apart. Players must dig through the dirt, carving persistent tunnels, trying to find the other player. The tank’s laser can be used to dig faster or fire upon the enemy. Moving, digging, and firing the laser deplete energy. Energy and shields are replenished while sitting inside the home base.

There was apparently an effort to put out an online multiplayer spiritual sequel, but the home page is mostly offline now.

    Take Arms

    networked multiplayer, action, xblig/win, free/paid
    Did not play

Take Arms is a military-themed multiplayer combat platformer. Play versus humans (XBLIG) or bots (Windows). Polished art style.

    Cobalt

1-Np local, platformer, windows, free alpha
    Did not play

Cobalt is a combat platformer by Oxeye Games in conjunction with Mojang. The alpha is Windows-only and supports “as many players as you have gamepads.” Should support Mac and Linux by the time it goes into beta. It features slow-mo combat, stubby robot players, and a variety of weapons.

    Joe Danger

    1-2p, stunt racing, ps3/xbla, paid
    Did not play

Joe Danger is a stunt motorbike racing game that adds physics and platforming elements. Check out the prototype video to witness the game’s humble beginnings.

    CoD of Duty

    1p, fps, web (unity), free

CoD of Duty has you shooting fish in a barrel. Literally. It’s a spoof on military shooters, built for the One Game a Month Challenge. Blast those fish-filled barrels with a rocket launcher or take pistol potshots at pickerel. It’s a short game—worth playing to completion.

    . . .

    See you next week, jumpers.
