Friday at 10am the doors finally opened to the public at the Boston Convention center for the official start of the 2013 PAX East gaming conference. A mass of gaming fans that had been waiting in a long line outside started flowing into the building like an invading zerg force, all eager to head straight for their favorite games and developer booths.

IMG_2923If you’re a gamer this is the place to be as most every heavy hitter in the industry has a booth here; Nvidia, TwitchTV, Ubisoft, Capcom, Riot Games, and Blizzard Entertainment just to name a few. But, that’s just the beginning. The Indie Megabooth attracted a lot of attention from attendees itching to see the new breed of up and coming games from the smaller developer studios. Though the booths might not have the same production value as the big guys, they made up for it with their creative games and friendly developers happy to chat with everyone.

Run Jump Dev had 2 booths combined to show off games from local developers in Lexington, KY. Frog Dice had their popular game Tower of Elements, a match 3 tower defense game available for play as well as a title they are planning to release soon called Dungeon of Elements. In a stroke of marketing genius, Michael Hartman and his wife brought their daughter’s girl scout cookies, effectively cornering the market at the convention. For $5 you got the cookies PLUS a free copy of Tower of Elements!

Super Soul received a lot of attention from passers by who are fans of the twin stick shooter genre. They were demoing the upcoming multiplayer update to their game Compromised. Richie and John were busy speaking with attendees interested in the game and many who played either bought it at the booth or couldn’t wait to get home to download it from the Xbox Indie Marketplace. Soon to be collectible Super Soul T-shirts and buttons were also available to the public.

Chase Lacas, of Shobu Games was excited to get some feedback for his upcoming game, Fearless Night, a competitive fighter game whose title character is named Poco Muerte, Spanish for little death. That’s a bit of an understatement though, as the weapon used by Poco is a demon tipped scythe! The action is fast paced in this game, and the characters are all hand drawn by John “Spike” Wible, giving the game art a very unique feel.

IMG_2897Warren Nash of the Lexington Bluegrass Business Development Group was also in attendance at the booth, providing a warm welcome and introduction to the various games available to play, as well as the budding game development industry in Lexington, KY.
