Monday nights, 6PM, at Awesome Inc., we meet up to expose ourselves to indie games. C’mon out and look at how small game designers are pushing the medium, or bring something we can play!

This week we discussed four games, Electronic Super Joy, Magical Pop’n, Lim, and Cry$tal Warrior Ke$ha.

Details after the jump.

Electronic Super Joy

electronicsuperjoy

Electronic Super Joy  is an exacting 2-D platformer that the developer calls “an electronic action experience.” It is a PC game that allows beta access with a pre-order.

The game is incredibly challenging, with precision platforming. The aesthetics are described as similar to those of the 2D platformer Limbo, but with a good deal more pop. Think Limbo goes to the disco. Your character navigates a very dangerous world.

The game will be released on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android.

If you are interested, you can buy the pre-order the game here and watch the trailer here

Magical Pop’n

Magical_Pop'n_(SNES)_09

Magical Pop’n  is a 2D side scroller with elements of Metroidvania. It has several aspects similar to the game Zelda. Released in 1995 by Polestar, the game is a Japan only release for the SNES.

Magical Pop’n was known at the time of it’s release for using the voice of Japanese idol Ai Iijima. The game has a “life” system and hearts that you are supposed to collect. For it’s Metroidvania aspects, it does have a lot of backtracking within levels and enemies that respawn.

You can watch a video of play through here.

Lim

lim

Lim is a exploratory labyrinth game with a unique mechanic. The game is made in HTML 5 and free to play.

While the game (by Merritt Kopas) is technically about the bullying associated with coming out as trans, it could be used to demonstrate the effects of bullying in general. Whenever you are out of the sight of other squares, you flutter between colors wildly and move quickly. When you are near other squares, you can alter your color to be like there’s. When you do this, the view shrinks down until you can only see yourself and the screen begins to shake violently. However, if you reveal yourself around the other squares as being a different color, you are violently attacked.

You can play the game here.

Cry$tal Warrior Ke$ha

Cry$tal Warrior Ke$ha is a chaotic Twine game made by Porpentine. The game is internet based.

Cry$tal Warrior Ke$ha is similar to a choose-your-own-adventure, where you play as the pop-singer Ke$ha as she gets attacked by haters. The game is mostly a black screen with text prompts that come up, as you navigate  through Ke$ha quotes and with the song “Warrior” playing in the background on repeat.

You can play the game here.

If you have any games you would like to show at Indie Game night, be sure to come and join us Monday at 6pm at Awesome Inc.
