Monday nights, 6PM, at Awesome Inc., we meet up to expose ourselves to indie games. C’mon out and look at how small game designers are pushing
the medium, or bring something we can play!
This week we played Tough Love Machine, Rocket League,
Tough Love Machine
A multi-player cooperative game about tough love. The game has a sort of Mac 2 quality to it, featuring interesting sound effects and simple, if effective, mechanics. The theme is simple but likeable, and it’s a good usage of solving problems without conflict but instead working together to create love (or not).
Tough Love Machine is available to play on Newgrounds.
Rocket League
Just another one of those cars-as-players, high-octane sports game. A unique multiplayer competitive experience, Rocket League has the potential to open up a new competitive scene. Quick action becomes the equivalent of jousting depending on level of interest and strategy. Positives, there is no crashing — no sudden stoppage to break the flow of the game. It’s very get up and go, something that goes well with the fast-paced, if slightly wacky premise.
The game is not without problems — the ball physics are difficult to control, it often feels that you have little to no real control over your car (though that might change with more intense play), and the font choice is a bit difficult to read (especially when it shrinks down in four player multiplayer.) The game doesn’t have as good of a selection menu as something like Sportsball for the Wii U, but it’s well designed and interesting.
You can check out Rocket League on Steam and the PS4.
